New Independent Theatre Festival Seeks Offensive Work
NEW YORK, NY (September 3, 2013) Applications are being accepted for the first Festival of the Offensive (F-OFF) to be held April 28 to May 4, 2014 at the Producers' Club in Times Square, NYC.
F-OFF showcases live performance that attacks the status quo and otherwise might not be produced because the establishment doesn’t have the balls to do so. F-OFF is a self-produced festival and open to all with a juried selection process. Both novice and established producers are encouraged to apply.
F-OFF seeks work 60 to 120 minutes in length that:
- examines and satirizes the status quo
- brings willing audiences out of their comfort zone
- is sincere, not smug
- tackles new and uncomfortable subjects or presents alternative viewpoints on the usual suspects
- takes risks
- can hold its theatrical liquor
F-OFF is not some liberal lefty progressive NYC hippie theatre fest. It will include work from all sides of the political spectrum from conservative to classically liberal and Libertarian to progressive and beyond.
The Festival further distinguishes itself from other festivals through its paperless application process, low all-inclusive fees, and a strong commitment to support productions in marketing and PR. In addition, F-OFF does not take any money from Box Office sales.
F-OFF was started by NYC-based writer and performer Jacquetta Szathmari. A veteran of the United Solo and Hollywood Fringe Festivals and an avid fringe theatre fan, Szathmari saw a need to create a niche festival for work that seeks push the boundaries in an era of lazy so-called cringe comedy and smug “preaching to the choir” info-tainment. Szathmari believes the hard part is “prompting audiences to thoughtfully examine and question the origins of their beliefs and impulses while entertaining. And to do it without dogma.” The Festival of the Offensive hopes to provide this rare opportunity to both audiences and entertainers.
